Google is now allowing users to move from AI overview to AI mode conversations

Google provides users the ability to ask follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews, which are the AI-generated summaries at the top of Google search results. Users will now be able to navigate the conversation back and forth using AI Mode, Google’s conversational search feature for complex questions.

The tech giant also announced that it is making Gemini 3 the new default model for AI Overviews globally. This update will give users “best-in-class AI responsiveness directly on the search results page,” the company said in a blog post.

Tuesday’s announcements signal Google’s ongoing efforts to make search less of a static search results experience and more of an interactive, AI-driven experience.

“People come to search for a very broad range of questions — sometimes to quickly find information, like sports scores or the weather, where a simple result is all you need,” Robbie Stein, vice president of product at Google Search, said in a blog post. “But for complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic in depth, you need to be able to seamlessly leverage a powerful conversational AI experience.”

Google says its tests show that users prefer a naturally flowing experience in conversation and that asking follow-up questions while preserving context from AI Overviews makes search more useful.

The new experience is designed to look like a single flow, with links that allow users to move from a quick snapshot to a deeper conversation as needed, the tech giant says.

The updates come a few days after Google announced it was bringing them “Personal Intelligence” for AI modeallowing it to leverage Gmail and Google Photos to provide more personalized responses. Company Personal intelligence debut Earlier this month in the Gemini app to let the AI ​​assistant customize its responses by connecting across the Google ecosystem, ranging from Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history.
