Elon Musk has made so many headlines that it’s easy to forget the buzzing headlines that were written when he and singer Grimes gave their son, born in 2020, a truly unique name. The boy is now called X, the same letter Musk tweeted and uses at SpaceX. But its full name is more complicated: X Æ A-12.
The boy is now 5 years old, but when he was an infant, his father appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience and confirmed the pronunciation of the name.
“How do you say the name?” Rogan asked. “Is it a placeholder?”
Apparently not. Musk said at the time that the name was pronounced “X Ash A Twelve.” (“Æ” is a letter used in some languages, including Danish and Norwegian. It is often pronounced “ash,” but some people pronounce each letter, saying “A E.”)
“First of all, my partner is the one who mostly came up with the name,” Musk said of Grimes. “I mean it’s just X, the letter X, and it’s pronounced ‘Æ’ and ‘Ash’, and then A-12 is my contribution.” He went on to say that the A-12 stands for “Archangel 12, the nose of the SR-71, the most amazing plane ever.”
Musk has 14 children, with four different women. According to people. His other children with Grimes are a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, aged 2, and a son, Tau Techno Mechanicus, aged 3.
In February, before the highly publicized spat between President Donald Trump and Musk erupted, X appeared with his father in the Oval Office, where the president described the little boy as a “high IQ individual.”
But the boy’s mother was not happy.
“He should not be seen in public like this,” wrote X’s mother, singer Grimes. According to the standard. “I didn’t see that, thank you for alerting me. But I’m glad he was polite. Sigh.”

If you want to hear Musk pronounce X’s full name, you don’t have to fast forward through much of the video. Rogan asks him to say it just 37 seconds into the 2020 podcast.
Grimes chirp A more detailed explanation of why the different parts of the name were chosen in 2020. She described
As for the A-12, she described the plane as “our favorite plane,” and went on to promote it as having “no weapons, no defenses, just its speed. It’s great in battle, but it’s non-violent.” Grimes also noted that the A in A-12 stands for “Archangel,” which she said is “my favorite song.” The title song of many songs does not specify the archangel, however Some music sites I guessed it could mean Burial band song. Grimes once cited Burial’s song Archangel As her favorite on Tumblr.
She ended her tweet with the words “metal rat” and emojis of crossed swords and a rat. 2020 was the year of the “Metal Rat” According to the Chinese zodiacalthough of course it can simply mean “heavy metal fan”.
•X is the unknown variable ⚔️
•Æ, my faerie spell of Ai (love and/or artificial intelligence)
•A-12 = Precursor to the SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but not violent 🤍

Grimes misspelled SR-17 instead of SR-71, but Musk corrected her in another tweet, writing, “SR-71, but yes.”

She replied, “I’m recovering from surgery and barely alive, so please forgive my typos, but damn. That was supposed to be profound.”

The name likely doesn’t appear on the child’s official California birth certificate — at least not in the spelling shared by his parents. One California family law attorney told People magazine that although the name is not illegal, The state does not allow codes on birth certificates. Apostrophes are allowed, as in a last name like O’Connor, and it seems that a hyphen might pass as well. But symbols like “Æ” may cause the certificate to be rejected and the parents will have to submit it again.
At the time, Musk also noted that he was excited about the baby’s birth on May 4, known as Star Wars Day For saying, “The fourth is with you.”
