Parasite is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the past decade. In 2019, it was the first non-English language film to win the Best Picture Oscar, and in a 2025 New York Times poll of more than 500 actors, directors, and other Hollywood insiders, it was also named Best Picture. The best film of the twenty-first century (yet).
The South Korean film, written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, is a black comedy, social satire and a dark and violent thriller all in one. The film revolves around a poor family who makes their way to work in the home of a wealthy family. When they learn that there is another unexpected secret hiding in the family basement, things turn into bloody chaos.
Parasite isn’t the only Oscar winner for Best Picture Netflix – The streamer also carries movies like Forrest Gump, Titanic, and The Hurt Locker – but it’s so widely recognized and loved that I think it’s added a bit of prestige to the platform. The film has become a reliable mainstay, running for a year, longer than many films do.
Now that Parasite is leaving Netflix on January 31, where can you watch it? We know one place, and the good news is that it’s one of our favorites Free streaming platformsKanopy, which has become a trusted place to watch the best independent films from cinemas such as A24 and Neon (which produced Parasite), plus it has plenty of content for kids, TV shows, and classic movies. Unlike many free services, it is ad-free. All you need is a library card.
While it’s unfortunate that Netflix lost Parasite, the movie isn’t disappearing from streaming entirely, and you can even create a movie marathon out of it. The Kanopy library also includes a few other Bong Joon Ho films, such as Mother, Barking Dogs Never Bite, and The Host as well.
