A24 has emerged as one of the most innovative production companies in recent years. While the films it produces span every genre – from horror to documentaries to comedy and beyond – the entertainment house has become synonymous with a particular aesthetic.
The company has attracted individual filmmakers such as Sofia Coppola, Ari Aster, Yorgos Lanthimos and Barry Jenkins, who have helped define the company’s creative ethos to the point where the film is often easily recognizable as an A24 production. The 2022 X-film is the first film in writer-director Ti West’s X-horror trilogy. Mia Goth stars as an aspiring adult film star, Maxine, who is making her first film in a rented house in a rural Texas town. Goth also plays the house’s owner, an old woman named Pearl who develops a violent obsession with the group and goes on a rampage, intent on killing every member of the virile young crew. Afterwards, Goth and West collaborated on two more films, Pearl and MaXXXine, based on the same characters. Both X and Pearl are available to stream on Kanopy, Tubi, and Plex. In “Problem,” Julio Torres plays an aspiring game designer from El Salvador who now lives in New York and has big dreams of becoming a game designer. When he is unable to find a job in his chosen field, he takes a job as an assistant to an eccentric and eccentric art critic, played by Tilda Swinton. Jonathan Demme’s concert film Stop Make Sense is an account of the events of Talking Heads at the height of their fame. The film was originally released in 1984 but underwent a 40th anniversary restoration and was re-released by A24 in 2024. It is now available on Kanopy, Plex, and Tubi.
In the psychological horror film It Comes At Night, an infectious disease has wiped out the world’s population, forcing a family (Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr.) to hide deep in the woods to avoid contracting the disease. When another family visits their home, they are drawn to the mention of safety in numbers, but distrust soon grows between them, leading to paranoia and violence.
Lest you think A24 has only made horror films and psychological thrillers, Dicks: The Musical is a good reminder that they’re a great source of offbeat comedy, too. The 2023 musical is directed by former Seinfeld writer and director Larry Charles and stars Nathan Lane as Megan Mullally as an estranged ex-couple whose children grew up apart, but later meet as adults and realize they are identical twins. The twins try to reunite their divorced parents, Parent Trap style, and although it doesn’t quite work out, they do have a wild adventure (in the sewers) where they realize their relationship is deeper than they thought. The cast also includes Megan Thee Stallion, Bowen Young, Nick Offerman, and Josh Sharp.
