It took some convincing, but earlier this year, I finally ended a years-long relationship with Microsoft 365. I’d say I gave up the Office suite for some precise reasons, like I didn’t want to. Microsoft AI Copilot Because I find it unhelpful and distracting, but my motivation was much simpler. I wanted to save money, and I found a free alternative called LibreOffice.
LibreOffice can trace its roots back to 1985 with the release of the word processing software Star-Writer I. In 2010, the independent German non-profit Document Foundation LibreOffice, the free open source software suite, has officially launched. And since then the foundation He said Government offices around the world have saved money by moving to an office suite.
In addition to being free and open source, LibreOffice offers other advantages, such as more document privacy than Microsoft 365 or Google Docs, but there are also some drawbacks, such as the lack of cloud-native access to those documents. Here’s what to know about LibreOffice if you’re considering switching from Microsoft 365 or Google Docs, as I did.
Don’t miss any of our unbiased technical content and lab reviews. Add CNET As Google’s preferred source.
LibreOffice includes six apps, most of which will be familiar to anyone who’s used Microsoft 365 or Google’s suite of office apps like Docs and Sheets.
Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, and Base are counterparts to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio (for creating flowcharts and diagrams), and Access (or designing business applications and templates), respectively. LibreOffice also has a mathematics program called mathematics Which allows you to create and edit formulas for use in other LibreOffice programs.
You can easily edit PDFs and other file types in LibreOffice.
You can install LibreOffice on Windows, MacOS, and Linux devices. So you can download this to a file MacBookA Microsoft Surface Laptop and many other desktop or portable computers. But there is no mobile app.
LibreOffice also offers Mobile appwhich means you can keep a stand-alone copy of your productivity suite on a flash drive to use between different computers. You don’t even need to have LibreOffice installed on a machine to run it, as long as you install it on a flash drive.
LibreOffice has some advantages over other office suites, including its non-existent price. Here are some of the pros of LibreOffice.
Since LibreOffice is open source, anyone with sufficient technical understanding can look into its source code to identify weaknesses or bugs. If you’re smart enough, you can fix the problem yourself and provide a patch for others to use. Additionally, some elements of LibreOffice can make it more private and secure than other office software suites.
LibreOffice He says It does not collect or send your user data without your consent. The organization also says it doesn’t create a user profile for you or track how you interact with documents.
In comparison, Microsoft 365 It collects two different types of data: what it calls required and optional. Much of the data Microsoft 365 collects is tied to hardware and software, which can be used for basic fingerprinting — such as understanding the hardware and software being used. But it may also collect Client IP addresses. for you Public IP address It is similar to a home address in that it gives a general idea of your geographic location, along with information about your Internet service provider. Although the information Microsoft 365 collects may not pose as much of a threat if leaked as personal data like passwords and usernames, it is more information than LibreOffice collects, which is good for peace of mind regarding privacy. And you can always use a VPN To hide your public IP address and other information.
LibreOffice saves documents locally on your device — not in the cloud or with a third party — and lets you set a password or encrypt a file with GNU Privacy Guard key. So, even if your device is stolen or someone gains remote access, there are measures in place to keep your files safe.
Overall, LibreOffice is a great alternative to similar products from big tech companies that doesn’t collect unnecessary data.
LibreOffice has some privacy features that you might appreciate.
LibreOffice is compatible with many documents, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Apple Pages files. You You may encounter compatibility issues With some font types, such as multi-colored fonts, when displayed in LibreOffice.
Reddit one The user also discovered that you may encounter problems if you exchange complex documents multiple times between LibreOffice and other Office suites, such as Microsoft 365. If you use LibreOffice and you exchange a document with someone who uses Microsoft 365, you may have to change the file type in order for the document to be readable in your chosen Office suite. This can cause some problems with the document, but to avoid this, you can save the file in a common format, such as .doc.
If you don’t plan to send LibreOffice files to others, you shouldn’t have a problem. I don’t plan to use LibreOffice for anything beyond budgeting and personal writing, and I don’t want anyone outside of my family to see any of that stuff. But if you plan to use LibreOffice for business documents or other high-risk files, you might keep backups in multiple file formats, just in case.
LIbreOffice’s Calc has similar functionality to Microsoft Excel.
LibreOffice allows you to customize the functionality of its programs through a wide range of extensions and templates in a file LibreOffice Extension Center. Here you can find free plugins and add-ons, such as MLA format templates that allow you to easily add citations, spell checkers for different languages, and even Snake game. Because who doesn’t want to include a Snake game in their spreadsheet?
LibreOffice is completely free, and there are no subscription fees. This has been a huge draw for my family as we look to cut unnecessary costs in our home. We can’t justify the price of Microsoft 365 for how little we use it.
Google also offers office productivity apps, like Docs and Sheets, for free, but unlike LibreOffice, they require a Google account to use, which means you’re handing over some personal data.
There are compelling reasons to use LibreOffice over its competitors, but it has some drawbacks compared to other applications, such as Microsoft 365 or Google Docs.
Some people may feel that LibreOffice is more complex than other similar office suites. Google Docs, for example, is a fairly straightforward word processor that almost anyone can jump into and use. LibreOffice’s interface may seem intimidating to new users when compared to other office suites.
For example, LibreOffice’s Writer interface felt cluttered because option icons, such as Insert Footnotes and Basic Shapes, surrounded my blank document in a ring. It was a lot to take in at once, but I realized that some of these options were located in the Microsoft Word document under tabs like Insert and Layout. Having all these options on one screen was a little overwhelming for me, but it didn’t take long to get used to the busy workplace.
LibreOffice doesn’t offer native cloud support or integration, which can be disappointing if you want to work on a document from multiple devices. This also means that you cannot collaborate in real time on a document with someone else if you are not in the same location or using the same computer.
If you want to work on a document on multiple devices, you can upload the file to a flash drive, and sync the files using File Cloud storage service Like Dropbox or sending the file via email, but that requires additional steps and equipment.
There are no portable versions of LibreOffice available at the moment – only desktop applications.
“The Document Foundation has limited resources and is focused on the LibreOffice desktop application,” the organization wrote. connected.
There is a read-only app available for Android devices with… Calls the organization “Support experimental editing.” Due to its experimental nature, I do not recommend relying on this mobile app to edit documents, as it may have some bugs.
The Document Foundation does not provide technical support for individual LibreOffice users. So, if you need customer support, you can submit a bug report or consult LibreOffice Community assistance page. In contrast, if you use another office suite, such as Microsoft 365, you should be able to contact customer support more easily.
It depends. I’m a simple guy, and LibreOffice is free without losing the basic functionality of a word processor – which is all I need it for. But LibreOffice’s customization options with new, free templates and add-ons that can add even more functionality make me feel like I’m getting a good deal. Some users on Reddit find LibreOffice to be… Good Like Microsoft Word, enjoy how Customizable or appreciate how It is open source.
So, if you want a personalized experience with useful extensions, want more privacy for your documents and enjoy free stuff, try LibreOffice. If you want an office suite that makes it easier to collaborate virtually with others, want a mobile app, or don’t want to learn new software, LibreOffice may not be for you.
