Spotify It makes it easier to keep up with what your family and friends are listening to by adding two new features to Messages. The listening and Jam ordering activity is launched in the company’s mobile app Announce Wednesday. Previously, you could only monitor your friend’s listening on the desktop version of the app. Now, these two social features will let you share what you’re listening to and see what tunes your friends are listening to in real time.

How to use a listening activity on mobile
Listening activity is available to all Spotify listeners, regardless of whether they have a free or premium account. However, it’s not automatic, and subscribers will need to opt in to use this feature. The function displays the music you are listening to within messages, and if you are not listening to anything, it displays the last song you played.
This activity is only visible to people you already communicate with in the Messages app. Others who have subscribed can view your activity, even if you haven’t activated it on your end. You’ll still be in control and can choose which contacts can view your activity. If you are not interested in this feature, you can turn it off at any time.
- Open your profile and go to Privacy & Social Settings to enable listening activity.
- Find your family or friends’ activity at the top of message chats in the chat row.
- Tap a family member or friend’s activity, and you’ll have the option to play songs, add the tracks being played to your own library, pull up the song’s context menu, or post an emoji reaction.
How to use Jam Request on mobile
Although the Jam feature has been around for some time, Request Jam acts as a companion feature to Listening activity, so you can start live listening sessions within messages. Instead of just looking at the song someone is streaming, you can turn it into a shared experience or even chat about the song in messages. You need a Spotify Premium account to start the jam, but customers with a free subscription can join the jam if they’re invited.
- In any message chat, tap the Jam button in the upper right corner to send a request. Your recipient can either accept or decline.
- Upon acceptance, they become Jam Session hosts. You and your friend will then be able to add songs to your shared queue and listen to music together. Requests that do not receive a response will time out after a few minutes.
Spotify has begun rolling out Listening and Jam Request activity to users on iOS and Android devices. The features will become widely available by early February and will be available to users 16 and older.
