The gap between premium and budget TV brands is closing fast


New TVs from TCL and Hisense, like the TCL X11L, close the performance gap compared to Sony, LG and Samsung.

For all the time I’ve been covering technology, there’s been a hierarchy when it comes to TV brands. The big three — Sony, Samsung, and LG — have been at the forefront for a while. Pioneer and Panasonic had plasma TVs, and Panasonic is getting back in the game in the US. Hisense, TCL and Vizio competed as mid-range segments for years before Vizio shifted from hardware profits to an ad-focused model under Walmart, leaving the other two to out-compete each other by offering the most bang for their buck.
