At this point, it’s worth examining what exactly Kennedy said about the incident in his August 2024 video, in which he is, for some reason, talking to Roseanne Barr.
“I was taking a group of people falconry in Goshen, New York, in the Hudson Valley,” Kennedy says. (Goshen is in Orange County, New York, home to a population of bears to which Haynes hypothesized the cub might belong.) “Then a woman in a truck in front of me hit a bear and killed it.”
Kennedy claims he put the bear in his truck with the plan to “skin the bear” and “put the meat in my freezer,” because it was in “pretty good condition.”
“And you can do it in New York State, where you can get a roadkill bear tag,” Kennedy adds.
Kennedy says he and his friends had a great time hunting hawks, and it was late in the day. Eventually, he found himself rushing “straight back to the city” for dinner at Peter Luger Steak House—presumably the original location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, rather than its Long Island location—and decided he didn’t have enough time to get the bear home to Westchester, New York. So the bear came to (apparently) Brooklyn. But when Kennedy’s dinner also took a long time, he realized he had to go to the airport.
“I wasn’t drinking, of course, but people were drinking with me and thought it was a good idea,” Kennedy says, insisting for a second that he was breaking no laws at all that day. “I had an old bike in my car that someone told me to get rid of. I said, ‘Let’s go put a bear in Central Park, and we’ll make it look like he got hit by a bike.’ It will be fun and funny for people.” He explains that there was a “series” of fatal bicycle accidents around that time — there have been two in recent months — which inspired the idea.
In the video, Kennedy claims he was surprised when he woke up the next morning to find that the story of the young black bear dead in Central Park was big news — again, bears don’t live in Central Park outside of their zoo — and had prompted a major law enforcement response. Allegedly, what made Kennedy particularly concerned was a news report that said the bike had been sent to a forensic laboratory for fingerprinting.
like Hell Gate It was summed up shortly after Kennedy’s video was posted, “??????????????”
Despite the new documents that WIRED was able to uncover, there are lingering questions about the decisions Kennedy made that day in 2014. Let’s review the timeline: The bear was discovered on the morning of Monday, October 6, 2014. If Kennedy had actually disposed of the bear the night before, it would have been Sunday, October 5, 2014.
Kennedy claims to have found the bear in the Hudson Valley area on a road approaching Goshen, New York. A stop in Westchester on his way to Peter Luger would have added about 35 to 70 minutes to the trip. Maybe, even if he was meeting friends familiar with his alleged love of animal corpses (his daughter once claimed he loved animal corpses). Headless A dead whale with a chainsaw, tied its head to the top of his pickup truck, and brought it home (although a later National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration investigation said its claim was “unfounded”), which would have been unacceptably late. But why didn’t Kennedy abandon his mission to skin and slaughter this little bear by placing it in a wooded area anywhere between Goshen and New York City, especially knowing that he had a flight later? Only one man knows the answer.
