Dell, HP and Lenovo have announced new laptop designs that make it easier to repair or replace individual components to help extend the life of the product. This approach is a throwback to the days before everything inside a laptop was soldered to the motherboard or was difficult to access and remove, but it’s welcome nonetheless.

These PC makers have heard from customers — especially on the enterprise side — that they want to be able to replace the keyboard, battery, and other parts when they break or wear out too much rather than having to spend a lot of money on replacing the entire system. This trend has also appeared in the business laptop’s inverse – a gaming laptop from MSI that makes it easy to service and upgrade RAM and SSD.
