Nvidia announces DLSS 4.5 with 6x frame generation and improved image quality

Nvidia is announcing the next major update to Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) at CES today. DLSS 4.5 includes Nvidia’s second-generation ultra-high-definition adapter model and a new 6x Multi Frame Generation mode for RTX 50 series GPUs that uses artificial intelligence to create up to five additional frames for each displayed frame.

DLSS 4.5 will be available for all RTX GPUs today, but will run faster on Nvidia’s latest RTX 40 and 50 cards. The latest model of adapters is designed to improve overall image quality and reduce some of the artifacting we saw with DLSS 4.

“This second-generation model is our most advanced yet,” Henry Lin, Nvidia’s director of product management, says at a press conference. Edge. “It uses 5x the computing power compared to the original Switch model, was trained on a dramatically expanded high-resolution dataset, and takes full advantage of the GeForce RTX 40 and 50 GPUs, which take advantage of faster, more advanced Tensor Cores.”

Nvidia has updated its DLSS model to better understand scenes in games so it can use game engine data to improve lighting, fine edges, and motion clarity. At a press conference, Nvidia showed off improvements to DLSS 4.5 in a variety of games. Shadows are reduced in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered,Refinement has been improved in Indiana Jones and the Grand CircleThere is less flicker in some scenes Kingdom Come: The Second Redemption.

While the AI model improvements to DLSS 4.5 will benefit all RTX owners today, Nvidia is also launching a new 6x multiframe generation mode for RTX 50 series owners in the spring. 6x mode is aimed at 240Hz 4K gaming, and will create five additional fake frames for each frame displayed, rather than the maximum of three additional frames in DLSS 4.

Nvidia is also launching a Dynamic Multi Frame Generation mode that automatically switches between different multi frame generation levels depending on when you need more or fewer fake frames. “When things are graphically intense, it increases the frame rate required to offset performance drops, ensuring your high refresh rate display remains extremely smooth,” Lin explains. “When it lightens the workload, it seamlessly shifts the multiplier to account for only what is needed.”

DLSS 4.5 will be available to more than 400 games and apps through Nvidia’s app today, allowing RTX owners to force 4.5 into games that haven’t yet been updated. Nvidia is only committing to a vague “spring 2026” time frame for 6x multiframe generation and dynamic frame generation modes for RTX 50 series owners.
