At CES on las vegas today, Lego She unveiled her new look Smart gaming platformaims to bring clearly analog plastic blocks and figures into a new world of technology-enabled interactive play – but crucially without relying on screens.
Smart Play revolves around Lego’s patented sensor and technology-packed bricks. It’s the same size as a standard 2×4 Lego brick, but is able to connect to and interact with smart minifigures and compatible smart signs in real time. By pairing these components, big and little kids can create contextually appropriate sounds and light effects as they play with the Danish company’s toys.
For example, a $100 Lego toy will launch on March 1 star wars The 584-piece Smart Play Luke’s Red Five All sounds are coordinated by the group’s central Smart Brick brain.
Two additional Lego Star Wars Smart Play sets will be released on the same day, but all three are available for pre-order from January 9. One is the 473-piece Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter set ($70) with ion engine sound effects, but a choice of all three can be the $160, 962-piece Throne Room Duel set with three clever minifigures of Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine and Luke Skywalker. Obviously, the combination of a brick-built brain plus connected characters will allow players to recreate (or rewrite) the final lightsaber battle — complete with laser saber sounds — between Luke and Vader at the end of the game. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. You can also listen to “The Imperial March” as Emperor Palpatine watches the fight from his throne.
Lego claims the Smart Play platform was developed in-house by the company’s Creative Play Lab team in collaboration with Capgemini’s Cambridge Consulting “It features more than 20 patents that are the first of their kind in the world within its technology.”
The heart of the system is a specially designed Smart Brick chip, which measures smaller than a standard Lego brick. Other items crammed into the eight-stud brick are an LED array, accelerometers, light sensors, an audio sensor, and even a small speaker.
The internal battery is supposed to keep you going even after years of inactivity, and to avoid any need to access the cable to the Smart Brick once it’s integrated into the beloved creation, Lego has also added wireless charging. In fact, Lego has made a charging pad that powers several smart building blocks at once.
