I tested the Huawei Pura X: this widescreen phone is refreshing and fun

I’ve tested many foldable phones in the past, but I’ve never stuck with any of them. My lifestyle does not require phone It folds into a smaller footprint to fit in my pocket. There is a market for them, no doubt, but when I use… Foldable phoneI want it to expand the capabilities of my current phone. That’s why I like to use Huawei Bora.

Most foldable phones are narrower and longer than traditional smartphones. They have large 6.9-inch displays with a 21:9 aspect ratio, but the Pura X is unique in terms of design. It has a smaller 6.3-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 16:10, making it an ideal screen for reading and watching video. The Huawei Pura X is a refreshing take on foldable phones. It’s more of a small, book-style foldable phone than a flip phone. In fact, I enjoyed using it more than Motorola Razr and Galaxy Z flips From the world.

I love reading on Pura X.

I wasn’t able to use the Pura X as my primary phone because it’s a China-only device. So, most of its pre-loaded apps are in Chinese. I installed some Google apps like Chrome and YouTube, among others, to make the experience as close to my main device as possible.

In the past 10 days, I have loved watching content, both visual and written, on my Huawei Flip. It combines the pocketability of a flip phone and the readability of a book in one device – while offering a better video viewing experience than both.

The Pura These specifications may look similar to iPhone 17, Galaxy S25 and Google Pixel 10but the Pura X has an aspect ratio of 16:10 (versus 20:9 in tablet phones). Its greatest benefit can be noticed immediately when watching movies and videos on YouTube.

The video consumption experience on foldable phones is usually not ideal. They usually have huge message boxes (thick black borders) at the top and bottom (on Galaxy Z Fold 7) or left and right (on Galaxy Z Flip 7). Movies shot in 21:9 ratio are better on foldable phones but worse on foldable book-style devices. The Huawei Pura

This may surprise many, but as you can see from the image above, you get more video viewing area on Huawei’s 6.3-inch display than on Samsung and Motorola’s 6.9-inch foldable phone screens. In fact, 16:9 YouTube videos on the Pura X are the same size as videos on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (in the slightly wider horizontal orientation). This is only the second time I’ve liked watching videos on a foldable phone (the first was… Huawei Mate XT Tri-fold phone, also for the increased viewing area with an aspect ratio of 16:11 when fully opened).

It also provides an enjoyable reading and web browsing experience – all you have to do is rotate the phone in the portrait orientation. In terms of design, the Pura X is slippery, and its wider design is not conducive to grip in the hand. Fortunately, it weighs less than 200 grams, so it’s not as heavy as modern flagship phones. I got used to it within a few hours.

Another learning curve was getting used to positioning and opening the buttons like the fold (from the right side) rather than the face (from the bottom). The latter was easy, but I was still struggling with the former.

It may take some getting used to but I love this design.

When you open the Pura X, you’ll need to rotate it 90 degrees to change its orientation to use it vertically. Huawei’s user interface does not allow you to use the phone horizontally. So, every time I open the Pura

The fingerprint sensor that naturally rests on my thumb (when the phone is folded) moves to the top of the phone when it’s unfolded. I’ve added data for my index finger to unlock the phone, and that may not be a big deal in the long run, once my muscle memory gets used to it. But even now, it was a bit annoying to get a mention here.

It’s nice to have the camera versatility of a tablet on a foldable phone.

For context, most foldable phones only have two rear cameras, but the Pura X’s optics are as versatile as a tablet. Camera performance is similar to what you’d expect from a Huawei phone: smooth, bright skin tones, good dynamic range, and rich detail.

The Huawei Pura My unit runs HarmonyOS 6.0, which is smooth and seamless in everyday use. It has a 4720 mAh battery with support for 66W ultra-fast wired charging and 40W fast wireless charging.

The Pura X is for those who want the best video consumption experience on a foldable phone, without compromising on portability and cameras. It was launched earlier this year at a starting price of 7,499 yuan (about $1,065) for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage version. However, it is He got a price cut Recently and is now selling for 6,899 yuan (about $980).

After using the Huawei Pura X, I can confidently say that widescreen foldable phones have their own place in the niche category. This has made me even more excited about the rumors of 4:3 iPhone fold and Samsung “Wide Fold” In 2026.
