Sam Altman hires someone to worry about the dangers of artificial intelligence

OpenAI is hiring for a position Head of readiness. Or in other words, someone whose primary job is to think of all the ways AI could go horribly, horribly wrong. In a Share on XSam Altman made this position known by acknowledging that the rapid improvement in AI models poses “some real challenges.” The post goes on to specifically point out the potential impact on people’s mental health and the dangers of AI-powered cybersecurity weapons.

“Track and prepare for frontier capabilities that create new risks of significant harm. You will be the leader directly responsible for building and coordinating capability assessments, threat models, and mitigation processes that form a cohesive, rigorous, and operationally scalable security pipeline.”

Altman also says that looking forward, this person will be responsible for implementing the company’s “preparedness framework,” securing AI models to unleash “biological capabilities,” and even setting guardrails for self-improving systems. He also states that it will be a “stressful job,” which seems like an understatement.
