AT&T just revealed which holiday has the most calls. No, it’s not Christmas.

The holidays are a time to connect with friends and family, either by gathering in person or checking in remotely. So, of course, you might think phone Calls will be at their highest during the holiday period at the end of the year. But according to new numbers AT&T shared with CNET, another holiday had the most calls in 2025. Which one?

The answer may give you goosebumps: AT&T subscribers made about 651 million phone calls on Halloween. The company didn’t share any other data besides the sheer number, which led me to wonder why this spooky season has inspired so many calls. Lost trick-or-treater calling her parents for a ride? People who wear costumes at parties accidentally call their friends? Evil spirits steal people’s phones? Only spirits know the truth.

Despite the volume of one-day calls, text messages are far more common than phone calls throughout the year. As of December 9, 2025, the network recorded almost three times more texts than calls: 525 billion text messages sent versus 181 billion calls made during the year.

And top day texting? December 1, 2025, when about 2.3 billion messages (2,264,041,461 to be exact) were sent.

These numbers represent traffic on AT&T’s mobile network, which does not include home or business broadband services. Of course, it’s a snapshot of just one provider. AT&T has about 119 million subscribers, according to Wikipedia.

When you look at Phone plansuntil Unlimited phone plansusing tens of gigabytes of data in one month seems like a lot. But at the network level, the scale is amazing, even in limited areas.

For example, AT&T also launched the three largest data events of 2025: Mardi Gras (March 4) record 57.5TB; South by Southwest (SXSW) (March 7-15) passed with 34.1 TB; The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Miami (May 4) burned 24 TB. (One terabyte is approximately equal to 1000 GB).

Overall, across all of AT&T’s networks — mobile, broadband, and enterprise — the company reported an average data traffic of 1 exabyte per day. That’s 1 million terabytes.

With the massive communications infrastructure built over the past few decades by AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and others, we are likely long past the days of phone networks being clogged by a surge in calls on Christmas Day.

So make sure to call your family this holiday, or at least send a text message. The network must be able to handle it.
