Even for $1000, Xbox Ally It didn’t ship with drift-resistant magnetic joysticks, nor did the $600 model. But for an additional amount $20 at Amazonyou can change that today – with officially Asus certified TMR joysticks from Gulikit, the company that has made a name for itself by providing drift-resistant sticks in the aftermarket.
The company says it worked with Xbox Ally maker Asus to create these sticks, that they will “automatically recognize” when you swap them out, and that you can use the mobile device’s built-in Armory Crate app to calibrate them afterward.
While I haven’t tried these things (I have… Pair in my switch), I can confirm that it is very easy to open Xbox Ally to install it. Simply unscrew the Philips head screws, insert the guitar pry tool to create a small gap, then pull with a little more force than you think you need to open the clips. The joystick modules are located directly below it. There’s nothing holding you back – simply open the ribbon cable and unscrew its three screws.
Here’s the company’s detailed instructions in case you want to see it for yourself — though I wouldn’t recommend using sharp tweezers to tighten cables when your fingernails can do the job more safely and easily. (I’ve probably broken a few ribbon cables in my life.)
When we talk about TMR or the older, less energy efficient Hall effect joystick technology, I usually write “drift-resistant” rather than “drift-free” because maybe Find your center point drifting over time – but the beauty of magnets is that you just have to recalibrate! Unlike the potentiometer joysticks that come with Nintendo, Sony PlayStation, and Microsoft Xbox consoles, you’re not removing material that will cause permanent drift while using the magnetic versions.
Gulikit’s new Xbox Ally sticks are $20 in the US todayand should also be available in the UK for British pounds20, and in Italy, France and Spain for 22 euros in January of this year.
