The Oscars are switching to live streaming only on YouTube starting in 2029


Hollywood’s biggest night is getting a modern makeover. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday that the Academy Awards will be streamed live for free on YouTube starting in 2029, and will no longer be broadcast on broadcast television starting that year.

CNET I previously reported these rumors In August, but now it’s official. The new partnership includes a multi-year deal that will give YouTube exclusive rights to broadcast the Oscars from 2029 through 2033.

Since 1976, ABC has televised the Academy Awards, a partnership that will continue until 2028.

During the Academy Awards last March, the Academy experimented with a simultaneous live broadcast of the awards show ABC and Hulu.

YouTube will also stream red carpet and behind-the-scenes coverage, among other exclusive content. YouTube TV subscribers and viewers will also have access to the Academy Museum’s digital exhibitions and programs from the Academy’s collection.

“We are thrilled to enter into a multi-faceted, global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Academy Awards and year-round Academy programming,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a statement.

Although viewership has declined over the years, the Oscars remain an iconic ceremony, with actors and creatives aspiring to win a golden statuette. Through the latest partnership, the Academy has been able to succeed in reviving further interest in the prestigious awards show Reach new audiences.

“The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the Academy’s work to the largest possible audience around the world – which will be beneficial to Academy members and the film community,” Kramer and Taylor said.

Representatives for the academy and YouTube did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The upcoming 98th Academy Awards will be broadcast on ABC on March 15, 2026, as well as the ceremony’s 100th anniversary in 2028.
