Grab your sword and shield, wanderer, for the Lord is coming for you Diablo 4 next year along with the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion. The announcement came during this year’s Game Awards, where the Paladin was announced as one of two new classes in the expansion. If you want to wield the Power of Light, you can pre-order the Lord of Hatred and get instant access to the Paladin.
The action RPG was released in June of 2023, just a few months ago XboxMicrosoft closed Acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In October 2024, Blizzard released the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, which included the new Spiritborn class and took players to the jungles of Nahantu.
The new Lord of Hatred expansion is set in Skovos – the oldest area of Sanctuary and the former home of Lilith and Inarius. Players will make their way through forests, coasts, and ruins in battle against Mephisto, the expansion’s titular archdemon that Diablo series veterans first fought in Diablo 2 Chapter 3.
They will be able to fight great evil as the Paladin, one of the playable classes from Diablo 2, and a highly sought-after class in Diablo 4.
Here’s what we know so far.
The Lord of Hatred expansion will be released on April 28, 2026.
The expansion will come with two new classes. One of them is still a mystery, and we’ll likely have to wait until we get closer to launch to find out what it is.
But the headline here is the Paladin class.
Paladins enhance their medieval armor and heavy weapons with the Holy Power of Light. As a Paladin, you can channel powerful auras and summon holy weapons to battle enemies and become an invincible guardian on the battlefield.
Paladins will be able to choose from four divisions, each supporting a different style of play.
Juggernaut: This shield-focused style turns defense into attack and supports tanking tactics.
Juggernaut Paladins are able to withstand a horde of enemies.
fanatic: A sword-based section focusing on Zeal’s updated mechanics and the Holy Blade’s ultimate ability.
Zealot Paladins can hack through enemies with a massive sword.
judge: The first choice to inflict divine punishment through holy spells such as Blessed Hammer and Heaven’s Wrath.
Judicator Paladins rain holy magic onto the battlefield.
Student: If you want to be transformed into an angel, piercing the legions of darkness on the wings of holy light, take this oath.
Disciple Paladins can take the form of an Arbiter, which is a great option for people who have always wanted to play as Tyrael.
D4 has been criticized for its endgame, especially for the limited number of activities available to a fully equipped character with enhanced stats. Lord of Hatred promises to revamp the endgame about player choice through greater challenges and fishing? I think even hikers need to relax sometimes.
Lord of Hatred will introduce War Plans, allowing players to choose preferred activities and enable modifiers as they strive for rewards.
The big challenge will be Echoing Hatred, a post-game challenge specifically designed to challenge the most improved versions. Plan your build, grind for loot, and see if you can survive the onslaught.
In addition to these additions, the expansion will also rework Diablo 4’s skill trees by expanding level caps and providing class-specific variants in the game. The game’s crafting system will be upgraded with the Horadric Cube, a legendary artifact that allowed you to transform items in Diablo 2 into other items via specific recipes. A new spell mechanic will add specific bonuses to items that can be equipped.
Paladin fights in one of the new locations in Lord of Hatred.
We don’t have pricing details yet, but Lord of Hatred will be available in three versions:
Pre-orders of any edition grant immediate access to the Paladin class.
