ChatGPT’s “adult mode” is expected to debut in the first quarter of 2026

We’ve seen NSFW displays from Grok and other chatbots, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been teasing adult content within ChatGPT for a while. Now, we have a timeline.

Fidji Simo, chief applications officer at OpenAI, told reporters during a Thursday press conference about GPT-5.2 that she expects “adult mode” to debut in ChatGPT in the first quarter of 2026, adding that the company wants to get better at predicting age before introducing the new feature.

OpenAI is currently in the early stages of testing an age prediction model, which is designed to automatically know when certain safeguards and content restrictions apply for users under 18 years of age. Simo said during the press conference that the company is already testing the model in some countries to measure its ability to identify teens “and not misidentify adults,” something the company wants to correct before adult features debut.
