Amazon is shipping its new Kindle Scribe models, including the Colorsoft Scribe

When Amazon announced Three new Kindle writersincluding the main color model, Kindle Scribe ColorsoftIn it Fall product launch event In late September, it said the two models with headlights would ship later this year in time for the holiday season. True to its word, Amazon says the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe with front lighting ($500) Available today. Entry level Kindlescribe without front light ($430) is still listed as “coming soon” and is scheduled to arrive in early 2026.

I just received review samples of the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and the new Kindle Scribe Mono with front-illumination, and I’ll be testing them out in the coming days.

As I said before, it’s not cheap. Kindle Scribe with Front Light starts at $500 with 32GB of storage ( 2024 Kindle Writer It has a front light and starts at $400). To get color, you’ll have to pay $630 for the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft device (upgrading the storage capacity from 32GB to 64GB costs an additional $50). Not coincidentally, that’s almost exactly what it is Paper Pro E Ink Color Tablet from reMarkable Costs.

New clerks have some major upgrades that may allow you to forgive the higher prices. For starters, they have a larger 11-inch display (compared to 10.2-inch) while being housed in a similar chassis to the previous model. Size gains come from smaller bezels, and the displays have newly redesigned “display clusters,” including a new micro-LED lighting system.

Additionally, the new Scribe is slightly thinner, at just 5.4mm thick, and lighter, weighing 400g (compared to 430g for the previous model). It’s powered by a new custom MediaTek processor that Amazon says provides a 40% performance boost. Note that none of the new Scribes devices are waterproof like the Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Colorsoft.

Amazon says it made the upgraded battery-free Premium Pen slightly shorter and thicker, which has improved ergonomics. Its magnets also seem stronger because you can now pick up the tablet with the pen when it’s stuck to the edge of the writer.

Amazon had an issue with a faint yellow tinge to the bottom and smaller sides Kindle Colorsoft When it launched its color E Ink model last year (the problem was most noticeable with the front light on). I paused charging my Kindle Colorsoft for several weeks until I fixed and replaced the units of users who reported the problem; Amazon said the issue affected a “small number” of Kindle Colorsofts.

Amazon appears to have fixed the Kindle Colorsoft’s yellow band issue — or at least it has Hardly noticeable. Some E Ink e-reader fans have suggested that the way the Colorsoft display was designed made it vulnerable to this problem, while the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft’s new, more advanced display design should eliminate the issue.

Needless to say, the first thing I checked after I uninstalled my Kindle Scribe Colorsoft was for any yellow tinge. I didn’t notice anything, even with the color mode set to “Vivid” and the front light turned up all the way, as you can see in the photo above. I tend to keep the light warmth setting at a cool 7 or 8, which is toward the whiter/bluer end of the color temperature spectrum.

I’ll be doing a full review in the coming days, but in the meantime, you can check it out My hand is on the first take For all three new Kindle Scribe models.

Amazon describes Scribe upgrades this way:

  • New front lighting system with mini LEDs that fit tightly to the screen to create a narrower bezel and uniform illumination.
  • New molded glass for improved traction when the pen slides across the screen.
  • A redesigned screen array reduces parallax to almost nothing, so it feels like you’re writing directly on the page.
  • A new quad-core MediaTek chip, more memory, and new custom Oxide display technology to make everything feel even faster.
