OpenAI is preparing to launch GPT-5.2 soon

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced the “Code Red” status. Earlier this weekprompting employees to respond quickly to increasing competition from Google and Anthropic. Sources familiar with OpenAI’s plans tell me that the company plans to first respond to Gemini 3 with an upcoming GPT-5.2 update.

I understand that GPT-5.2 is ready for release, and could appear early next week. Sources tell me that update 5.2 should fill the gap that Google created with Gemini 3 launched last month – A model that topped the leaderboards and impressed Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk.

Information Reported earlier this week, OpenAI’s next inference model “leads ahead of (Google’s) Gemini 3” in OpenAI’s internal evaluations, according to Altman.

I’ve been told that OpenAI was originally planning to release GPT-5.2 later in December, but pressure from competitors pushed the release forward. Currently, OpenAI has set aside December 9 for the release of GPT-5.2.

I reached out to OpenAI for comment on GPT-5.2, but the company did not respond in time for publication.

As I said When it revealed GPT-5 OpenAI launched in August, and its planned release dates often change in response to development challenges, server capacity issues, or even announcements and leaks of competing AI models. This could mean we see GPT-5.2 a little later than December 9th, if plans eventually change.

Either way, we also expect to see ChatGPT evolve in useful ways in the coming months, as OpenAI shifts its focus away from flashy new features and toward improving the Chatbot’s speed, reliability, and customizability. Altman announced this code in red to improve ChatGPT, and the GPT-5.2 release is just the beginning.
