Zoe Schiffer: Yes, I think the one thing everyone can agree on is that Nvidia is undoubtedly one of the companies that has done the best during this AI acceleration moment. For better or worse, about 90 percent of Nvidia’s sales, previously dominated by gaming PC chips, now come from its data center business, and it seems like every time there’s one of these partnerships between OpenAI and another company, Nvidia is in there somewhere, it’s as if it’s connected to everyone else in the industry at this point.
Max Ziff: Yeah, it’s done a great job of integrating itself into each of the AI companies, but also, I mean, that’s been a big concern. There’s been a lot of talk about these circular deals where Nvidia is really banking on a lot of these startups that it’s funding as well. He’s a customer, he’s an investor. Nvidia is too busy with this. So I guess in that way, it’s no surprise that Jensen is constantly defending the AI bubble now.
Zoe Schiffer: Yes. It’s also worth noting that one of the concerns that people who have a fear of the AI bubble will talk about is the fact that GPUs are the bulk of the cost of building a data center and need to be replaced. Every three years, Nvidia releases new chips and they are cutting-edge and companies need to buy them in order to compete. I think the fear is that this replenishment cycle hasn’t been fully factored into the pricing, but as long as people keep buying chips, what Jensen is saying is, “No, no, we’re isolated now.”
Max Ziff: right. We’ll see if this is actually true.
Zoe Schiffer: One more story before we part ways, and to get past this story, we must be more professional. Not sure about Max, as we always are, but just a little. You’ll see what I mean. WIRED contributor Matha Busby talked about how two young Mormons created an app to help other men kick their porn addictions and annoying habits. I’ll be real. I had never heard that term before reading this story, and I was shocked. Well, if you’re not familiar with gooning, it’s basically just another word for edging. That’s long hours of masturbation without release. This app called Relay was created by 27-year-old Chandler Rogers with the aim of providing a way for his Gen Z peers to stop doing it and generally escape the clutches of porn. I have some other ideas. I feel like going out and talking to a human being, but I don’t want to be mean because I feel like that could be very difficult for people.
