In order to accelerate the construction of new power plants needed to supply power to its data centers, Meta is looking to get into electricity trading.
Bloomberg reports Both Meta and Microsoft are requesting federal approval for power trading (Apple has already received such approval). According to Meta, this will allow it to make long-term commitments to purchase electricity from new plants, while mitigating risks through the ability to resell some of this energy in wholesale energy markets.
Power plant developers “want to know that energy consumers are willing to play the game,” Urvi Parekh, Meta’s global president, told Bloomberg.
“Without Meta taking a more active voice in the need to expand the amount of power on the system, this is not happening as quickly as we would like,” Parikh said.
As an example of Unprecedented energy needs According to the technology companies’ ambitious AI data center plans, Bloomberg notes that at least three new gas-fired plants will need to be built to power the Meta data center campus in Louisiana.
