CNET’s key takeaways

  • The LG G5 series is the best and brightest OLED display I’ve ever tested in CNET Labs.
  • At its selling price $1,997 for the 65-inch sizeIt’s expensive compared to some competitors.
  • The G5’s best-in-class brightness made gaming easier and more enjoyable than I expected.

As a Call of Duty player, I know that quick responses can mean the difference between achieving victory and staying at the bottom of the leaderboard. But even played Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 On the new LG G5 OLEDLittle did I know there was something else equally important.

I’ve tested dozens of The best TVs Over the years. My CoD session helped solidify my opinion of the G5 as the best OLED I’ve ever tested.

Why? One reason is this model’s best-in-class brightness: it’s the brightest OLED I’ve ever seen CNET TV Lab. Its clarity ensured that I could see both bright and dark parts of the screen – in a way that other TVs I tested couldn’t reproduce. For example, it was harder for enemies to hide in dark doorways because the TV makes shadows more visible.

Brightness for the win.

Image quality is very important when it comes to gaming because some of the latest developments, e.g HDR10 and Dolby Visionhelps elevate the gaming experience in a meaningful way, and the G5 can take full advantage of that. Zooming in on the Protocol map from Black Ops 6, I found that it was the clarity of the G5’s images that really impressed me. I toured the grounds of the old sea fort for this map — the sky was bright blue and the buildings jutted out of the sea — everything seemed more real, as if you were actually walking around here on an autumn afternoon.

But in the middle of my daydream, I found that people were shooting at me. Like a lot.

As part of my testing, I compared the LG G5 to four other TVs, including the new Samsung S95F, an LG C5, and two LCD monitors, all connected to the same Xbox. (With five screens showing simultaneously, I felt like I was starring in my own movie.) E-sports It happened.)

I’ve played a lot of games, including Doom, Ori, and Blind Forest, but Call of Duty was where I saw the biggest improvements. The thing that immediately stood out about the G5 when gaming was how bright it was. When combined with the TV’s deep contrast, the G5’s image popped in a way the competition didn’t.

That brightness you saw on the G5? This is thanks LG’s new four-layer panelwhich literally stacks two blue (and red and green) OLED displays on top of each other to output dazzling light.

This is technology that seems unique to the G5 at the moment, but it’s not the only advantage it has over the slightly cheaper – and slightly lighter – Samsung S95F. Unless something changes, a Samsung TV will never check the Dolby Vision checkbox — it’s just HDR10. So, if you’re an Xbox fan, the LG G5 (and others) will help you maximize your Xbox 4K compatibility test. (Go to Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details.)
