Many STEM games leave out programming tasks, which can limit their usefulness. Let’s Start Coding kits reject this approach, providing hands-on learning with electronic components and challenging children to dive right in and create programs in C++. The Ultimate Kit includes 23 separate parts, including an LCD display, speaker, LED strip, various sensors, and more. There are over 100 projects to embark on, with examples of code that kids can modify and helpful, if somewhat dry, how-to videos.
My kids need some encouragement and supervision with this, and I think the suggested age of 8 and up is low. A genuine interest in hardware and programming is perhaps more important than age. But there is satisfaction in successfully controlling hardware components. A Windows desktop, laptop, Mac, or Chromebook is required to use the free software. It may be better for younger children to start with a smaller, more focused group e.g Code Rocket ($60). – Simon Hill
