In the new Steam Frame VR headset, Valve has placed dual sound drivers on each side of the included head strap. This puts the sound close to your ears while you’re wearing it, and during my brief time testing the device at Valve headquarters recently, I thought the sound was good. But choosing to have these dual drivers also helps reduce audio vibrations, which helps the headset track while gaming in VR, says Valve hardware engineer Jeremy Selanne. Edge.
The Frame, like many other VR headsets, uses external cameras built into the main body of the headset for tracking. However, sound with good bass “induces vibrations in the headphone,” which could affect this tracking, according to Selanne. But on the head strap included in the frame, the dual motors for each side are mounted “against each other,” “nullifying the vibrations inherent in the design.” This allows for “better tracking, even with good audio,” says Ceylan.
Really amazing! The headset is also modular, so in theory, you may be able to use other headbands with other audio solutions later. It’s a really interesting headphone – I’ve been playing it recently I should try it myself.
