Pixel phones receive notification summaries

Google releases an update for Pixel phones with an interesting feature: notification summaries. Apple in particular has had a lot of trouble implementing its version of this AI-powered feature, and Google is taking a cautious first step by only rolling it out for chat conversations. It will arrive as part of this month’s Pixel update for the Pixel 9 series phones and later – excluding the Pixel 9A.

Now, Pixel 6 and later will expand fraud detection beyond Google Messages to include some third-party chat apps including Telegram and Discord. The notification itself includes a badge describing it as a “potential scam,” and clicking on the notification triggers a system pop-up encouraging the user to be cautious. Google is expanding access to call scam detection as well, making it available to Pixel 9 (except 9A) owners in the UK, Ireland, India, Australia, and Canada.

Meanwhile, back in Google’s own messaging app, users will be able to “remix” images using AI directly within messages. This update extends beyond Pixels to the broader Android ecosystem, though it’s limited to English, US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland and New Zealand for now. Additionally, Pixel 6 and later will prioritize chat notifications from your VIP messages.
