A24 has become one of the most interesting film production companies in recent years, and while the films it produces span every genre, from horror to documentary to comedy and beyond, the entertainment house has become synonymous with a particular aesthetic. A24 has attracted individual filmmakers such as Sofia Coppola, Ari Aster, Yorgos Lanthimos and Barry Jenkins, who have helped define the company’s creative ethos to the point where a film is often easily recognizable as an A24 production. And her films aren’t just underground hits either. Many of them, such as Room, Moonlight, and Everything Everywhere All at One, also won Oscars.

The 2013 film Under the Skin stars Scarlett Johansson as an alien living among humans on Earth who captures men, only to return them to her place where she stores them in a mysterious vat of dark goo. The film is directed by Jonathan Glazer, who would go on to direct A24’s Oscar-winning film Zone of Interest. The film can be polarizing – you’ll likely love it or hate it – but there’s no denying that Johansson gives a stunning performance that’s miles apart from anything else she’s done.

After the Sun (2022)

The 2022 drama Aftersun stars Paul Mescal as Callum, the young father of an 11-year-old girl named Sophie (Frankie Corio). The two vacation at a Turkish beach resort together, and the film is a poignant and beautiful personal study of their relationship and a reflection of their fleeting shared moments together. We later see the adult Sophie watching the camcorder footage she shot, and reconnecting with memories of her past. the It was critically acclaimed The film is available on multiple platforms this month, including Tubi, Plex, and Kanopy.

You Hurt My Feelings (2023)

Where to watch: Plex, Tubi, Kanopy

There’s nothing Julia Louis-Dreyfus can’t do. In “You Hurt My Feelings,” the actress, who is, in my opinion, one of the best comedic artists of our time, wears a more dramatic hat in this marriage story about a writer whose husband doesn’t like her latest book.

Louis-Dreyfus plays Beth, a memoirist who ventures out to write her first novel. When she begins to doubt her talents, she overhears her husband Don (Tobias Menzies) disparaging the book. Unable to confront Don, Beth’s ego is hurt and her confidence in their relationship is shaken. The film contains plenty of laughs while clearly acknowledging how minor grievances can escalate into the collapse of an entire relationship.

Priscilla (2024)

Where to watch: Toby

Written, directed and produced by Sofia Coppola, Priscilla is a biographical film about Priscilla Presley and her relationship with her husband, Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi). The film follows Priscilla from their first meeting in 1960, when she was just 14 years old, to their engagement and eventual marriage. The film represents a stark contrast to Baz Luhrmann’s flashy Elvis biopic, trading in that fast, frenetic pace for a gentler, more realistic look at the dynamic between teenage Priscilla and adult Elvis.

Zola (2020)

Where to watch: Blix, Toby

Yes, it’s a film inspired by a series of tweets, but in the hands of director Janexa Bravo, Zola becomes so much more. In 2015, a woman named Aziza “Zola” King went viral for a story she wrote over the course of 148 tweets about a road trip she took to Florida with a new boyfriend who wasn’t what she seemed. Taylor Paige plays the main character in the film, and Riley Keough plays Stephanie, a stripper who invites Zola to fly to Tampa so they can make money dancing. But what ensues is a brutal story of sex and violence that eventually turns into murder.

A24

Luke (2013)

Where to watch: Tubi, Plex, Kanopy

Tom Hardy is the only on-screen actor in the gripping psychological drama Locke, which is essentially just one man driving down the highway alone for 85 minutes. Hardy plays Ivan Locke, a man who decides to travel to London to be with the woman he impregnated (who is not his wife) while she is giving birth. Over the course of the car ride, Luke engages in a series of phone calls, each more stressful than the last, and his life slowly unfolds over the speakerphone. (The film has been universally acclaimed, with almost all reviewers admitting it is much more engaging than you might imagine.) Keep an eye out for Olivia Colman, Tom Holland, Ruth Wilson, and many other actors appearing as disembodied voices.

A24

Amy (2015)

Where to watch: Plex, Canopy

Amy Winehouse died in 2011 from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. If you only knew Winehouse from her near-constant presence in the tabloids, the 2015 documentary Amy, directed by Asif Kapadia, will make you realize how talented she was. Amy offers a devastating look at a young woman with extraordinary talents struggling under the weight of fame. The film features interviews with her closest friends, as well as colleagues like Mark Ronson, Mos Def and Tony Bennett, and never-before-seen footage from before and during her rise to fame.
