I’ve loved surreal and stylish European horror since I was old enough to start watching it. I spent a long time sniffing out every Giallo or weird gothic film I could find. Movies that are more like beautiful, terrifying nightmares than simple stories are some of my favorites, so to see a modern creation that reflects so many of the older films I appreciate is so wonderful.

Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes is one of the best modern homages to the sensibility of 1970s European horror I’ve ever seen, leaning heavily into psychedelic imagery and a narrative that befuddles reality. It’s a film I’ve thought about constantly since I first saw it.

The film follows an unhappy couple, Margot (Luisa Taraz) and Dieter (Friedrich von Lottschau), as they make their way to a remote castle that Margot has inherited. When they have to spend the night, their relationship quickly deteriorates while some other strange things happen. After a major plot twist that I won’t reveal here, we learn that the relationship between the couple was never the same. Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes is a modern classic for many reasons – many of which have to do with the sheer beauty of the film itself. I rewatch it whenever I’m in the mood for something truly hypnotic, and its visual splendor never disappoints.
