Skylight Smart Calendar Max review: Family planning

With my Gmail account, forwarding emails with dates and appointments is easy, and once I got used to it, I did it almost unconsciously. I used to do something similar with important dates, but by sending it to my wife who would then act like a proper adult. At least with Skylight Calendar Max I seem to have some responsibility.

Aside from the calendar, there is a good set of other time and task management tools. You can set up, assign and manage household tasks, for example, and even award stars for their completion. I have yet to come home to watch my daughter vacuum or clean a guinea pig’s cage – both chores are included – yet they are always labeled as completed. Maybe she’s gaming the system, or maybe my AI secretary is doing it for her.

However, if you like tick menus, you’ll love the Skylight UI. Grocery, packing lists and general tasks are easy to create and interact with, and can be viewed instantly with the app, making supermarket trips easier. Add color coding of people and tasks and it’s easier to keep track of what’s happening and who should be doing what. There is a lot of scope here, and it is well organized.

Skylight Calendar Max also has a meal planning section — though you need to subscribe again to get the best of that section — which can suggest meals, create recipes based on preferences, and add ingredients to grocery lists. It’s comprehensive, and if you can’t stand the thought of thinking about what to cook every day, this might be for you. For our family, this was a step too far, and the AI-generated recipes weren’t really compatible with what we eat, but some users will love them.

Date night?

Over the past couple of months, the Skylight calendar has fallen out of favor in my house. The ability to upload and sync photos is a nice touch, and having a mix of my favorite photos is a treat when I enter the kitchen. Oddly enough, the AI assistant also pulls images from emails, so, in addition to fond memories from Christmas parties past, I have a mix of product images from launch invitations and the Swissair logo alternating.

Date syncing isn’t always smooth, and you should expect to spend some time working through the various menus. Naturally, the better your current diary is arranged, the better your cap will work. It’s also not smart enough to detect if multiple people are adding the same event to the calendar — school stuff emailed to both of us is the prime example — so there’s still a fair amount of editing required. However, one thing we all appreciate is the big alert box that pops up to remind us of the impending responsibilities of the day. It’s a simple gesture, but it gets things done.

The Skylight Calendar Max has certainly made planning your Sunday calendar easier. It’s great for scrolling and more interactive than a smartphone screen. Replace the red ink on the paper chart? Absolutely not…yet.
