Rivian has reportedly laid off 600 workers in its third layoff of the year

Rivian will reportedly lay off another 600 workers in its third layoff this year, or about 4% of its total workforce, according to Rivian. The Wall Street Journal.

The company previously cut about 100 to 150 workers in September and June for its commercial and manufacturing teams, respectively. Rivian declined to comment on the teams affected by this new round of layoffs.

The cuts come as Rivian prepares to launch its very important mass-market model, the R2 SUV, in 2026. The company plans to manufacture up to 150,000 of these electric vehicles annually at its factory in Normal, Illinois. Rivian also recently broke ground on a brand-new factory outside Atlanta, where it plans to build more R2s and other variants.

Until the R2 hits the road, Rivian is struggling to keep up with the pace of sales with its current lineup. My current best guess is current For total delivery numbers at the end of 2025 It would represent a 16% decline from last year’s sales.
