There’s a downside, however, and it’s not a simple one: once Sonar is running, you’ll need to keep your system’s default audio device set to one of the new outputs the app creates during installation. If you switch between speakers and headphones, changing the device in the system tray will no longer work, you can only do it in the GG app. There’s also no main sonar output, so you’ll have to choose one of the groups as the system’s default output, then… System volume controls will only affect programs designated for this category. To make things even more confusing, there’s a volume wheel on the Nova 3 that works independently of everything else.
I really like the practical value the app offers, but I’m a little frustrated with what the system’s audio settings look like, even when I’m using desktop speakers. I’ve been able to find some workarounds to keep the main volume knob working, but it doesn’t seem like it should be that complicated. It’s a shame, because I’ve become quite fond of the app, but having to go through a specific program to change my speaker’s volume is a bit annoying.

The Arctis Nova 3 is one of my favorite gaming headsets, but the software will be a deal breaker for some people. They provide a tremendous amount of practical value, but you have to make some compromises.
I know how people don’t like to tinker with their system settings, which is something I think I’m more tolerant of than average, and it still bothers me. All you have to do is know that the mobile app has a subset of features, all of which is a positive aspect for console gamers.
I find the Nova 3 so comfortable, and its sound so impressive for the price, that I’m willing to overlook the loss of the mute button. They have a great audio profile that’s only made better by equalizer profiles, long battery life with fast charging, and excellent system compatibility, all at a very reasonable price. Even with the more premium Arctis Nova Pro on my desk, I often find myself turning towards the Nova 3, and that’s saying a lot.
