Openai launches a free GPT model that can work directly on your laptop

Openai launches a new open weight model called it GPT -SSS It can be downloaded for free, customized, and even run on a laptop.

This model comes in two types: 120 billion of the parameters’ publications is 20 billion. The larger version can be operated on a single NVIDIA graphics processing unit and leads to the current OPENAI current OPNAI, while the smaller version performs similar to O3-MINI and works on only 16 GB memory. Both typical versions are released today via platforms such as Hugging Face, Databrics, Azure and AWS under APache 2.0 license, allowing them to be widely modified for commercial purposes.

This is the first open model in Openai in more than six years, years before the appearance of ChatGPT. Even early this year, CEO Sam German pointed to safety concerns as the main reason for not launching the follow -up. Meanwhile, developers flocked to open models due to their low cost and customization. In January, after Dibsic climbingTaman He said that Openai was “on the wrong side of history” by not launching its open models.

Now, Openai reaffirms itself with an open -weight model it says it can perform thinking tasks, browsing the web, writing code, and operating agents via the company’s current application programming facades. “I think many people are in fact surprised to know that the vast majority of our customers are already using many open models,” Chris Cook, an Openai researcher, said at a press conference. “We wanted to connect this gap and allow them to use our technology in all fields.”

On the Safety Front, Openai says that GPT-SS is its most testing model so far, and that it has been tested with external safety companies to ensure that there are no risks in areas such as cybersecurity and biological weapons. The model thinking chain, or the visual process used to reach an answer, shows “to monitor misconduct, deception and misuse”, according to the company’s press statement. Its output is only the text, and like all Openai’s models, GPT-SS training data has not been disclosed.

“The team really cook with this.”

Openai did not share the criteria that compare GPT-SS with other open models such as Llama, Deepseek or Google’s Gemma. Both GPT -SS variables are similar to Openai’s closed thinking models and tests such as the last humanity exam. “These are incredible models,” said Greg Brockman, one of the founders of Openai Brockman. “The team really cook with this.”

Openai does not adhere to a table for future versions of GPT-SS, but it hopes that the model will be used by developers and smaller companies that want to control how to use their data. “We have always thought that if you reduce the barrier in front of the arrival, innovation rises,” Brockman said. “You let people penetrate, then they will do things that are incredibly surprising.”
