What makes the phone moral? I talked to someone who builds one to find out

I spoke with Van Eyk at the Amsterdam’s launch event, which took a different group of smartphones. The company’s representatives also talked about how workers in their supply chain pushed a living and protected bonus of harmful chemicals.

It is not the easy or comfortable way to make the phone. But if the phone maker can do little like Fairphone to do this, it raises the issue of the reason for the inability of the industry as well.

“It takes an effort,” Ik tells me. “If we can do this, in my opinion, others can do this, because if you look at our scale, it is difficult to persuade suppliers to work in this way.”

One of the most prominent features (and note) in Fairphone 6 is a Lyme green sliding bar on the side of the phone. I was fascinated by seeing the phone in practice in the opposite direction. The scroll bar is customized, but it comes pre -programmed to convert the phone into a “basics” mode. This monochrome interface gives you access to the basic functions of your phone only-messages, camera, web browser and the like-to give you something closer to a stupid phone experience.

“We see discussions about smartphones for children. We see discussions about people who are glued to their devices so that they suffer from eye problems,” he says. “In fact on our mission … we want to make technology ethical. So it is also good to help our users to stop.”

When ethics meet a scale

Although its ideals and practices may be, this does not mean that Fairphone is higher than criticism.

If you follow the company’s journey closely as it did, it is impossible not to see a flow of negative customer experience reports during the past few months, especially complaints about waiting times and not communicating.
