A powerful new documentary from Calfatters – the organization’s first endeavor, thanks to partnership with obvious media and Bellingcat – is a look at the US border patrol operation.
The collaboration sets out significant discrepancies between the official accounts and the reality of a three -day immigration raid in Bakersfield. The investigation and the documentary stem from Olmos’ original report on January 10 on Calmatters of Immigration raids in Kern County In the last days of Joe Biden’s presidency.
“This deeply reported Calfatters investigation becomes richly powerful through partnership with obvious and Belling,” says Calmatters Kristen Go. “Connecting ground reporting and comprehensive research with bold visual stories and gripping video editing will reach and resonate with a wide audience.”
The investigation, combining a powerful documentary report with a detailed article and analysis of more than 50 videos taken from civilians, directly provokes customs and US border defense (CBP) for the attack on the sender. CBP claims that the operation is “highly directed” against immigrants with criminal records. Data from the Ministry of Interior Security received for this report reveal that CBP did not have a prior knowledge of a criminal or immigration history for 77 of the 78 persons detained during the three-day raid.
Through the ground reporting and a thorough analysis “Operation: Return to the Sender” documents the use of CBP of tactics to apply unconsciously in agricultural land, gas stations and main highways, actions that prompted ACLU to submit a proposal for disposal and to raise serious constitutional questions.
The documentary, told by Sergio Olmos of Calmatters, includes reporting from Olmos and a CalMatters reporter Wendy Fry. It includes interviews with agricultural workers, manufacturers, legal experts and CBP leadership, including the main patrol agent of the El Centro sector, Gregory Bovino.
This is the first CalMatters documentary after previous collaboration with CBS videos of Devastating effects of endless wild fires for the mental health of firefighters, earning the organization’s first organization calm AmyS
