6Sense founder Amanda Kahlo raises $30 million for alternative AI sales startup 1Mind

Although LLM-based AI agents are a fairly new phenomenon, one of the areas in which they have been most popular so far is sales. 1mind, The startup, co-founded by Amanda Kahlo, has been quietly shipping its sales agent, named Mindy, for about a year.

On Monday, the startup announced a $30 million Series A round led by Battery Ventures. The company says this brings 1Mind’s total raise to $40 million.

Kahlow is well known in the world of sales and marketing technology as the founder and former CEO of 6Sense. It was launched in 2013 as a tool to track mentions across social media and other sites to identify potential customers. She left in 2020.

While the market for sales agents is already crowded, 1Mind and its agent, named Mindy, don’t do what most do: send emails and make cold calls. This is a Crowded market Even its previous company, 6Sense, offers agents.

“I don’t play outside,” Kahlo tells TechCrunch. Mindy’s goal is to handle inbound sales, all the way to “closing the deal,” as Kahlo says. This agent is used to enhance self-service websites, Kahlo says, replacing a sales engineer on calls for larger enterprise deals. He or she can also specialize in onboarding new clients.

“Our goal is to replicate the human experience by going to market when you have intent, when buyers are inclined: they come to your website, or they do a Zoom call. She can come with us and be the sales engineer,” Kahlo adds, referring to Mindy with the anthropomorphic pronoun.

Kahlo even goes so far as to call her AI agents “superhumans,” even though they are neither human nor possess comic book-style superpowers.

However, each agent can be trained to understand an expanded knowledge base that includes all of a company’s products, technical details, and competitive situations.

While the startup uses a mix of underlying big language models including OpenAI and Google Gemini, the agent limits hallucinations with deterministic AI, both Kahlo and Mindy said (I invited the agent to our call). Deterministic AI provides guardrails, so once an agent digests a company’s sales materials, they must read that information without distraction. Furthermore, Mindy has been trained to say she doesn’t know the answer

With a year of operations under its belt, 1Mind is used by more than 30 companies, including HubSpot, LinkedIn, and New Relic, to view and close deals. Kahlo says her company’s full roster of clients all have annual contracts, not “pilot” budgets, and “the average contract is six figures.”

The company also uses the bot internally on its sales calls. But Kahlo had become a father. She created an avatar of herself, Amanda, and took it with her to her venture capital pitches.

During Battery Ventures’ due diligence, “we used it to go through the data room, asking a lot of questions about things like case studies,” Battery partner Neeraj Agrawal told TechCrunch about the Amanda avatar. A data room refers to the sets of data that a startup will share about itself with venture capital.

“The design of the conversation is very precise, such as which case studies you share and when,” he said. The VC also determined that customers were having long back-and-forth conversations, suggesting they would forget they were talking to the AI.

This avatar can still be accessed via Kahlo’s LinkedIn pageWhere the audience can interact with it. He can answer questions about 1Mind products, but also about other areas, such as Kahlo’s views on being a woman in technology. However, after chatting with him, he will always – as with human Kahlow – try to shift the conversation towards 1Mind.

Eventually, Kahlo says, 1Mind and other agent sales startups will replace high-end account executive sales roles. Or at least radically reimagined.

“We’re not at the point where we’re replacing the entire AE yet,” she says. “We’re replacing the website. We’re replacing the sales engineer, customer success, but the (AE/customer) relationship there is still happening.” “I think that over time, a lot of what the UAE is doing now will disappear.”

She thinks this is mostly a trust issue currently. Agent technology is so new that a buyer looking to sign a large enterprise deal isn’t prepared to do so without a human.

Interestingly, once trust develops, it contemplates (and actually builds) agent buyers. Agent-to-agent transactions will not involve human avatars, but will instead be transfers of information and requirements.

Meanwhile, 1Mind is still hiring humans: 44 of them, including in sales, with 71 openings, including account executives.

The round included participation from Primary Ventures, Wing Venture Capital, Operator Collective, Harmonic Growth Partners, Success Venture Partners, and angels from Monday.com, ZoomInfo, Databricks, Box, Gong, Braze and Verkada, 1Mind said.
