This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work as an intern at the CalMatters audience. As my time ends and I prepare for my senior year in college, here are the lessons I learned that could help other journalism students or those who start in their careers.
Newsrooms need to find ways to destroy how “big” news will affect their local audience. During my internship, I saw the reporter Kristen Hanging to break how the federal government’s new budget made significant changes Covered California, Which experts and insurers said both of them would make health insurance It costs more for users. The cost bill had thousands of consequences to cut and discuss, but resetting how it would affect one of the crucial importance of people’s lives, helped Calfatters move through noise. I then “translated” Kristen’s story into an accessible, Easy to breathe in Instagram In order to reach the Californians where they are, they are focusing on highlighting tangible details of history, such as how premiums are expected to increase by 66% or $ 101 a month from next year.
For my internship, I worked on the early development of a project to better use social media as a way to build deeper ties with a more adult audience. For the project I spent hours scrolling and exploring the users’ profiles on Tiktok and Instagram. I focused on finding a California -based people who had a platform related to the content of the news, there were news publications or the perfect combination of the two. From there, I was discussing whether the influenator would be appropriate within Calmatters and what it was, and if the influential themselves would agree and take advantage of a partnership.
As I spent hours on social media platforms, I received a bigger look at how useful social media and influencing today could be for newsletters. For example, I found profiles of young people who have built their platforms to discuss news in a more relaxing and digestible way for a more young audience. I also found professionals who used their knowledge to dismantle misinformation on social media and to provide real facts. Regardless of the actual content, those who had the following on the platform made a foundation to stand and make sure to carve a unique space for themselves within their content balloon.
During my internship, I had the opportunity to create a vertical video post about the history of reporter Lyn La on how California could take first in the descendants Prohibition of plastic shine in cosmeticsS
Like someone who regularly watches Tiktok’s beauty and style videos, I read her story and knew that she could translate very well into several different “Tiktok trends”. With this in mind, I have recorded and edited three ideas that can work on the Tiktok platform: a “Get ready with me” Video, “Shock“A tendency and a simple educational skit. In the end, my editors published a little less the risk skit of an explanatory (in the end they were a more than millennia), but I still felt that I could report the news with humor and a brilliance filter.
In general, I grew up and learned a lot this summer, both as a professional and as a journalist. I dawn forward with a new understanding of what journalism means today and how I can be the best reporter for readers and every newsroom I work for in the future.
